“These photographs remind us of our humanity and of the need for
understanding and compassion if we want a peaceful world and a
just one. The great English poet John Donne once wrote, “No man is
an island..... any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved
in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell
tolls; it tolls for thee.” What he said in words, these compelling
photographs tell us in pictures. They are a must for anyone who
values the unity, tragedy and potential of the human condition”.

The Coningsby Gallery is pleased to present the first UK solo show
by the acclaimed documentary photographer Giles Duley. Working
in the humanitarian field, Giles partners with well respected charities
such as Medecins sans Frontiers, IOM and UNHCR to highlight
lesser known stories deserving of public attention and action.
Although documenting challenging, and at times, horrific situations,
Giles captures the strength of those who fight their adversity rather
than succumb. Rather than shock his photographs draw the viewer to
the subject, creating intimacy and empathy for lives only differing
from ours in circumstance.
One Second of Light is a collection of forty-four images shot over the
last year. The images tell as yet often untold stories including the
plight of the Rohingya refugees, victims of acid attacks in Bangladesh
and post conflict Angola. While each image is a powerful narrative,
the total exposure time in camera of all the images in the exhibition is
only a single second of time - a mere blink of the eye – One Second
of Light.
Giles Duley was born in 1971 in London. After 10 years as an
editorial photographer in the fashion and music industries in both
the US and Europe, Giles now focuses his work exclusively on
humanitarian projects. His work has been published world wide in
many respected publications including Vogue, GQ, Esquire, Rolling
Stones, Sunday Times and New Statesman.
