North of the Tianshan Mountains is a photography exhibition by Anna (Qiang Xirou) that explores the diverse landscapes of northern Xinjiang through a series of images inspired by a personal journey across the region.
Centred on the Tianshan Mountains as both a geographical boundary and a conceptual framework, the exhibition focuses on the landscapes north of the mountain range. The photographs reveal the striking contrasts that define the region, from dry deserts and fertile oases to alpine lakes, grasslands, canyons, and mountain scenery.
The exhibition is organised according to different landforms. Beginning with mountain landscapes, the sequence moves through canyons, lakes, deserts, and grasslands before concluding with images of everyday life beneath Uyghur grape vines. This arrangement encourages viewers to experience the region as a connected yet diverse environment shaped by climate, geology, and culture.
Through these photographs, North of the Tianshan Mountains presents a portrait of a landscape defined by contrasts: rock and water, heat and coolness, openness and intimacy. The exhibition invites viewers to appreciate the beauty, scale, and diversity of northern Xinjiang while reflecting on the artist’s experience of discovering an unfamiliar and remarkable environment.
