Those Who Remain is an ongoing documentary photography project by Chinese photographer Huiling Chen, exploring everyday life in rural villages in Hunan, China. The work focuses on communities shaped by migration, ageing, and social change, where many younger generations have left to work in distant cities.
Through portraits, domestic interiors, agricultural labour, and scenes of daily routine, the exhibition reflects on how rural life continues through care, repetition, and attachment to place. Cooking over firewood, tending the land, preparing food, and maintaining everyday rituals become quiet acts of persistence within changing landscapes.
Made through long-term visits and close observation, the photographs focus on the rhythms of everyday life within communities shaped by migration and ageing. Domestic interiors, agricultural labour, cooking, and repeated daily gestures become quiet expressions of care, resilience, and attachment to place.
